We all know that NHS’s GPs are under pressure. Regular stories in the newspapers tell a tale of a workforce stretched and struggling to cope with its workload.
Time with your GP is a precious commodity, but did you ever think about how you can help relieve the stress on your local GP? At the same time, have you ever wondered what the effects of time pressure might be on your GP’s effectiveness in diagnosing your condition if you are taken ill with a complex medical issue?
At Hollybank Private GP Clinics, we provide a full, private GP clinic, with services ranging from regular appointments, through to diagnostics, screenings, and even minor surgery.
Relieving the strain on GPs part 1 – let us handle the admin!
As GPs, we have seen for ourselves what it is like working in a typical NHS GP surgery, and we know that there are a lot things that GPs are struggling to cope with. In particular, there are aspects of the job that are less urgent than others: medical reports; sick notes; insurance reports, for example. In other words, items that are not clinical, but that do add significantly to the workload of GPS.
At Hollybank Private GP Clinics, we believe we are here to support local GP practices and provide a little extra capacity and perhaps help prevent the burnout that we are seeing with GPs all across the UK.
Our GPs still work in the NHS and we cherish the NHS, as many people do. At the same time, we have come to realize that some people are prepared to pay for other options, rather than going to their local GP. The problem is that, for many of them, there simply is no alternative.
That’s where Hollybank Private GP Clinics can help: we offer all the normal services a GP surgery would offer, but in this instance we’d particularly like to draw potential patients’ attention to those services which we’d describe as “not clinically critical.” We believe that we can help the local GP surgeries a lot, even if only a small proportion of patients decide to bring these cases to us instead.
The sort of admin-heavy, non-urgent and non-clinical jobs like writing DVLA reports, insurance reports, travel cancellation reports, sick notes and physical fitness certificates for adventure holidays, can all add to the problem for GPs. Although individual patients may only occasionally need these services, across a typical GP surgery’s patient list, these jobs add a significant workload. Don’t forget, you’ll be charged for these services if you use your GP and our prices are exactly the same, so there’s no excuse for not using us.

Relieving the strain on GPs part 2 – ten minutes is not always enough!
At the other end of the scale, if you are suffering from a more complicated medical problem or problems, we can also help, by guaranteeing you some quality time with a GP. NHS GP appointments are limited to 10 minutes per patient and that puts pressure on the GP to deal with your issues, whatever they are, within that 10 minute window.
“With many patients to see every day, an NHS GP has little choice but to stick to this schedule. This means if you have a complex problem, your GP may struggle to deal with it within this time frame, and may advise you to make additional follow-up appointments for another time, and this in turn can prolong you illness.
We offer 20 minute, or even longer appointments, so that you are not rushed and, more importantly, if you have a complex medical issue, it can be given the time and attention it needs. Ten minute appointments are fine for simple, single medical issues, but for complex medical issues, they are inadequate.
So, if you feel like you want to relieve a little bit of the strain on GPs and the NHS, by taking your non-clincial issues, such as insurance certificates, to a private GP, or if you have a more complex medical problem and want to get to the bottom of it quickly, an appointment with one of our private GPs is a great option.
