In this week’s blog, we’re going to look at Botulinum Toxin A, often known by the brand names Botox, Dysport, and Xeomin. It is best known as a cosmetic treatment where it is mostly used to reduce the appearance of fine wrinkles, but it can also treat a range of medical disorders.
In particular, there are a couple of conditions that some people find distressing where the Botulinum Toxin comes in very useful.
One such condition is TMJ (Temporomandibular joint) disorder, where the jaw joints and muscles are always painful – usually caused by grinding of the teeth during sleep. Symptoms include a constant ache, which can apparently be coming from the ear.
The first line of treatment is a dentist who may prescribe a bite block. However, this doesn’t work in all cases and Botulinum Toxin injections into the affected muscle can give relief for several months. As well as giving relief, this is a safe and non-invasive treatment that may prevent patients from later developing arthritis of the jaw joint from constant clenching. Patients usually need 3-4 injections per year.
Another condition that can be treated very effectively with Botulinum Toxin is Hyperhidrosis, or excessive sweating, especially in the underarm areas. This is a relatively common disorder which produces a lot of unhappiness and affects an estimated 2%-3% of the population.
Patients sweat heavily all the time and this can have a huge impact on their social life, as well as at work and in some cases patients can become depressed and isolated by the condition.
It’s also a condition that’s very difficult to treat. We’d recommend you start with visiting your pharmacist, then your GP. But, again, if that doesn’t produce results, we can give botulinum toxin injections into the areas that sweat a lot. This simply relaxes the sweat glands that produce the excess sweating, reducing the symptoms considerably.
Again, patients usually need about three to four treatments in a year, but the treatment can be very effective and produce a lot of relief for the patient.
At Hollybank Private GP Clinics, we offer both these treatments, which are carried out by our GPs, whilst our aesthetics clinic, SkinEnvie, offers the anti-wrinkle treatment using botulinum toxin injections.
